Finger Tapping Test

Standardized Assessment of Motor Speed and Rhythmicity

This test measures fine motor speed and timing regularity. Tap the circle as fast as possible with your index finger for 10 seconds. Complete the test for each hand separately. Results provide metrics used in neuropsychological assessment to detect cognitive risk and neurological function.

Clinical Interpretation

Motor Speed: Lower tapping speed (taps/second) may indicate reduced motor function, which has been associated with cognitive risk including mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease progression.

Temporal Regularity: Higher inter-tap interval variability (standard deviation) reflects reduced motor timing consistency, a sensitive marker for early neurological changes even before significant speed reduction occurs.

Hand Asymmetry: Significant differences between dominant and non-dominant hand performance may indicate lateralized neurological impairment.

Note: This test is a screening tool and not a diagnostic instrument. Results should be interpreted by qualified healthcare professionals within a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment.
